CHP Motorcycle Officer Seriously Injured in SR 78 Collision

Escondido, CA — A California Highway Patrol Motorcycle officer suffered severe injuries Tuesday. The crash happened on SR 78 where it intersects with Interstate 15. The collision happened around 9:00 am and involved an SUV
The officer drove east in western Escondido during a period of heavy traffic. His motorcycle rear-ended a Chevrolet Traverse and toppled over.
The patrolman, a 21-year CHP veteran, slid across the road into a center median. A Subaru WRX struck his motorcycle.
Witnesses, including a nurse, stopped to provide help. The nurse provided first-aid while they waited for EMS. Paramedics transported the officer to Palomar Medical center. He will receive treatment for major trauma to the legs.
The patrolman is in serious but stable condition according to a CHP spokesperson. There are no other injuries reported. The cause of the crash remained under investigation until the late afternoon.
Until 2:00 pm Tuesday, all but one lane on eastbound SR-78 were closed.
