Kindred Hospital, San Diego

Kindred Hospital is classified as a post-acute private health care services company that also operates long-term acute-care hospitals and provides rehabilitation services across the nation. Kindred’s support center and headquarters are in Louisville, Kentucky. Kindred has approximately 38,300 workers in at least 45 states and, as of 2019, had $3.2 billion in annual revenues.

It is a 70-bed transitional care hospital that provides the same quality care as traditional hospitals but for an extended recovery period. They offer 24-hour clinical care seven days a week, an eight-bed ICU, and two negative pressure rooms. Kindred is a teaching hospital.

Kindred was originally founded in 1985 as Vencor, Inc. However, the Kindred name did not come into use until 2001, after Vencor emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In 2011 Kindred bought the RehabCare Group, followed in 2014 by the acquisition as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gentiva Health Services (home health care, hospice). By June of 2017, Kindred sold its skilled nursing facility, and in December 2017, it acquired three more companies Humana, TPG Capital, and Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe.

The home health, community care, and hospice businesses were separated from Kindred to operate as standalone companies. Kindred’s long-term acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, and contract rehabilitation services businesses are operated under the Kindred Health banner. Kindred transitioned to a privately held company in June 2018.

Kindred Hospital does not offer emergency services. Instead, they specialize in treating and rehabilitating post-intensive care and complex medical patients requiring intensive care and/or specialized rehabilitation in an acute hospital setting. They offer a wide array of rehabilitation therapies to help patients regain function and safely return home.

Kindred Hospital is located at 1940 El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego, just outside of downtown San Diego.
